Data and methods
- Government debt: gross debt of the general government (central, state and local government and social security funds) as a percentage of GDP, IMF. The World Bank's central government debt is narrower and covers fewer countries.
- Fiscal years: for some countries (for example India, Pakistan, Egypt and Iran) the IMF reports fiscal years, so its numbers can differ from calendar-year World Bank figures.
- Latest actual: each economy's most recent year with actual (not estimated or forecast) data; a small year next to a value marks data older than the column's year.
- Removed: zeros that stand for missing data in the source: government debt of Republic of the Congo in 1989–1999.
