S&P 500 · 1871–2026 · Robert Shiller's data
What investors in US stocks really earned
A regular chart shows only the index price. Here you can also see what dividends add and what inflation takes away.
That's how much the purchasing power of money invested in January 1871 grew with dividends reinvested: 7.1% a year above inflation over 156 years.
In nominal terms, $1 became $1.19M by October 2026. But prices rose 26.9 times over that time, so the real return is what counts: ×44.2K.
Dividends added about 4.3% a year of the 7.1% real return; price growth, 2.7%. Without dividends, purchasing power would have grown only 64.6 times.
Inflation took 2.1% a year: a nominal 9.4% a year turns into a real 7.1%.
If I had put $1,000 into 500S&P 500 in January 1990

How it is calculated
- Source: Robert Shiller's monthly S&P Composite data (Yale University, 2013 Nobel laureate), from 1871 to October 2026.
- Price is the average of daily closes in the month, not the month-end close. Before 1926 it is the Cowles Commission reconstruction; from 1926, the Standard & Poor's index (90 companies until March 1957, then the S&P 500).
- Dividends are reinvested monthly: each month's dividend buys more of the index at that month's price. Taxes, commissions and fund fees are ignored, so a real investor would have earned somewhat less.
- Inflation: the US consumer price index (CPI-U; before 1913, the Warren and Pearson reconstruction). Over the period prices rose 26.9 times.
- Preliminary data: dividends from July 2026 on are estimated from the last known value; the latest month's price and recent inflation are Shiller's preliminary estimates.
- Verification: on every update our calculation is compared with Shiller's own “Real Total Return Price” column; if they differ, the data is not published.
